UE still ranks number 1 in dentistry

The University of the East continued its number one (1) billing in Dentistry as the UE College of Dentistry obtained a 93 per cent passing mark, the highest among dental schools nationwide, as shown in the 2008 May-June Dentist Licensure Examination results released recently by the Professional Regulations Commission.

In the latest licensure examination, UE was classified among schools with 26-99 examinees. Sixty-two UE graduates passed; three passers in the top ten, out of the 67 examinees the UE College of Dentistry fielded, where they underwent three-day theoretical and two-day practical examinations.

UE’s three topnotchers are: Mikael Querol C. Nisce, second place (83.91 per cent); Charlston E. Uy, sixth place (82.70 per cent); and Joanna Marie Nicole M. Porter, seventh place (82.66 per cent). Uy graduated Cum Laude and received the College Distinguished Award during the UE’s 2008 Year-end Commencement Exercises.

According to UE College of Dentistry Dean Brenda S. Dey, this latest feat of the UE graduates is an all-time high passing percentage, achieving more than 90 per cent for the third time and sustaining a passing average of 84 per cent over the years.
The traditional testimonial dinner in honor of UE’s topnotchers, successful examinees and the faculty of instructions will be at the Kachina Room, Century Park Hotel on Tuesday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m., after their oath-taking ceremonies.

UE Red Warriors clinch 2008 Filoil-Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup

The UE Red Warriors won the 2008 Filoil-Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup championship at The Arena, San Juan City on June 14. The UE Red Warriors outclassed NCAA back-to-back champion San Beda Red Lions, 81-65. UE Red Warriors guard Paul Lee bailed out the team, scoring 20 of his 24 points after hitting five treys in the game’s final stretch.

Mateo, Head Coach Dindo Pumaren, Assistant Coaches Vic Escudero, Bong Ravena and Lawrence Yulo and Physical Therapist Andrei Tolentino, holding their first championship trophy of the tournament and the P300,000 cash price specimen check.

UE Warriors forward Elmer Espiritu was hailed as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. In another tournament, the UE Red Warriors also emerged as the 4th Nike Summer League 1st runner up at the Philsports Arena, Pasig City on June 15. Point-guard James Martinez led the UE Warriors with 11 points.

UE Warriors, Champions of 2008 Fil-Oil Flying V Invitational Cup Warrior Elmer Espiritu Named League’s MVP

Warrior sophomore Paul Lee played his best game in his young career scoring 20 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and help beat back to back NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions to capture the 2008 Fil-Oil crown last June 14, 2008. Lee, who was sidelined for three weeks by a sprained ankle injury, highlighted his brilliant performance with five triples capping a 19-9 UE run to take the lead at 66-59 in the fourth quarter.

“We badly needed our outside shots to go in because of the tight interior defense San Beda is applying” said UE coach Dindo Pumaren.

Because of their smaller line-up, the locals used their speed to weave through the defense of the Lions. Hans Thiele did a good job of controlling Sam Ekwe, San Beda’s Nigerian behemoth, and going after loose balls. He finished the game with a double-double performance, 16 points and 11 rebounds. Veterans James Martinez and Marcy Arellano did their usual damages, chipping-in 13 and 9 points respectively.

It was a day to remember for the Warriors’ slam dunk champion Elmer Espiritu as he earned his first Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) in recognition of his vital role to the team in claiming the 2008 Fil-Oil crown and was eventually named to the Mythical team.

The win and the title serve as a big boost for the Warriors campaign in the upcoming UAAP cage wars. The organizers of the league awarded the Red Warriors P300, 000 as their prize for being this year’s champion.

Notes:

24 hours later, the Warriors almost won another title at the Nike Summer League but lost to a miracle shot before the time expired and went home with the runner up, not bad for a team which won a title a day before.

The Scores:

UE – Lee 24, Thiele 16, Martinez 13, Arellano 9, Bandaying 8, Lingganay 4, Espiritu 2, Llgas 2, Etrone 2, Tagarda 1, Zamar 0, Duran 0, Reyes 0, Alabanza 0, Acuña 0

San Beda – Ekwe 17, Gamalinda 17, Hermida 13, Menor 6, Tirona 4, Lanete 2, Tecson 2, Marcelo 2, Taupa 2
